The towel is on the floor again. The toothbrush cup is beside the sink. You could fix both in ten seconds, but tomorrow they’ll be there again.

Give each child one small bathroom job, show them how, practice it together, then make it theirs. Start with the towel, toothbrush cup or a quick wipe, not a whole bathroom to clean.

Bathroom chores for kids by age

These are starting points, not deadlines. The same three jobs grow with your child: hang the towel, return the toothbrush and cup, wipe the sink and counter. “Help” means an adult stays involved; “own” means the child can finish after practice.

Age Can own after practice Do together or with help
2–3 Put the toothbrush cup on a low, safe shelf; hang a small towel on a reachable hook Guide their hand to wipe a water spot on the sink or counter with a damp cloth; help return the toothbrush
4–5 Hang their towel; put toothbrush and cup back in their places Wipe a small sink or counter area with a damp cloth while you check the finish
6–8 Hang towel and return toothbrush and cup as part of the morning and bedtime routine Wipe the bathroom sink and counter with you nearby, as in our age-by-age chore guide
9–12 Hang towel, return toothbrush and cup, and wipe the sink and counter with a suitable cloth Clean the toilet or tub only with an adult choosing and supervising the cleaner
Folded white and sage towels with a wooden body brush on a simple wooden bench.
A place for every towel makes the first bathroom responsibility easier to remember.

For jobs in the rest of the house, use our chores for kids by age guide. For the adult cleaning jobs, use the 15-minute bathroom reset checklist.

When Life Happens

When the towel lands on the floor again

Towel on the floor? Practice the hook again after the next handwash. Don’t turn one miss into a lecture.

Siblings arguing? Give each child a named hook or separate job so ownership is obvious.

Busy week? Keep just one job: towel on hook. Restart the others when the week settles.

Make it part of your week

Your Next Small Win

Tonight, put the towel hook within reach and show your child how to hang the towel. Tomorrow, let them do it themselves.
